MLK Day of Giving Campaign

hosted by Walmart

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is “What are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Together, our associates and customers inspired us, helping to raise more than $6.5 million through the MLK Day of Giving. Thank you for your generosity in making the day so successful.

Martin Luther King, Jr. believed that greatness comes through service. In honor of his servant leadership, the third Monday in January has become recognized as the MLK Day of Service and is intended to be more of day “on” than a day “off.” The MLK Day of Service encourages everyone to meet the needs of others in their communities. To help people meet the needs of others, Walmart, will host an online Day of Giving matching campaign for U.S. Walmart, Sam’s Club and brand associates as well as our customers and the general public on January 18th from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. EST. Subject to individual limitations, Walmart will match up to $2 million for associates and $2 million for customers, for a total of up to $4 million contributed to the Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at CAF America.

NOTE: As with all donations, participation by Walmart associates in the MLK Day of Giving campaign is strictly voluntary. Associates are not required to participate, and the decision to participate or not has no impact on the terms or conditions of your employment.

What is the MLK Day of Giving?
  • For associates: Walmart will match $3 for every $1, up to $2 million, donated to Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at CAF America by an eligible associate on MLK Day, subject to a $10,000 donation limit per associate. This means that only the first $10,000 donated by an associate is eligible for the Walmart match, up to the $2 million dollar campaign limit, first come, until the match is met.
  • For customers:Walmart will match $2 for every $1 up to $2 million, donated to Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at CAF America by any consumer on MLK Day through the MLK Day of Giving portal, subject to a $5,000 donation limit per person. This means that only the first $5,000 donated by a consumer is eligible for the Walmart match, up to the $2 million dollar campaign limit, first come, until the match is met.
Why are we doing this?
  • Our associates and customers are very passionate about supporting local nonprofits and national organizations that help address causes important to them.
  • Walmart wants to support the generosity of our associates and our customers, especially at a time when so many organizations need additional resources due to COVID-19.
How does the campaign work?
  • No purchase necessary to participate
  • Donations are being made to the Walmart Spark Fund for Charities at Charities Aid Foundation America (CAFA), a donor advised fund. This means that individuals donating make a recommendation to CAFA to contribute their funds to a selected nonprofit.
  • Potential donors select any qualified U.S.-based 501c(3) nonprofit organization found in the MLK Day of Giving portal.
  • CAFA is not required to donate the funds to the nonprofit recommended, and may refuse to transfer funds for a number of reasons including: the nonprofit has lost its tax-exempt status, the nonprofit is listed on a government or other risk watch list, or the nonprofit will not accept the funds.
  • If CAFA cannot honor your recommendation, you will be provided with an email notification and the opportunity to make a subsequent recommendation within 10 business days of the email notification’s date.
Things to note
  • Associates may give more than $10,000 during the MLK Day of Giving campaign, but only the first $10,000 donated by an associate is eligible for the Walmart match, up to the $2 million dollar campaign limit.
  • Consumers may give more than $5000 during the MLK Day of Giving campaign, but only the first $5,000 donated by a consumer is eligible for the Walmart match, up to the $2 million campaign limit, and dual customer matches will be capped at $5000.
  • Consumer donations are tracked for matching purposes using the email address provided at the time of the donation.
  • Donations will be matched on a first come, first served basis subject to individual limitations until the $2 million max is met per group.
